Engagement Puja

Introduction
An engagement is a promise to marry. It is also known as a betrothal. The occasion for formalizing an engagement and announcing the same to the society is known as an Engagement Ceremony. It is a fun-filled pre-wedding ritual. The period from the engagement to the wedding is known as Courtship and the to-be husband and wife are referred to as betrothed, fiancé-fiancée, or engaged to be married. It is one of the most beautiful periods in a couple’s life as they meet each other to get to know each other better. It is a formally permitted period of dating in an arranged marriage.

Importance and Significance of Engagement Puja
The bride and the groom are chosen by each other and their families by various methods such as common acquaintances or matrimonial platforms. Horoscopes are matched to check compatibility. The families along with the couple agree to announce it to the entire world through a celebration. The Engagement Puja is organised so that all the Gods and Goddesses bless the couple for the most momentous occasion of their life and also for their happy life together after that. It is also known as Ring Ceremony because the couple exchanges rings. Other names for engagement puja include sagai, roka, chunni, Nishchitartham, mangni, kurmai etc.

Benefits of Engagement Puja
Any Puja is done to improve the harmony, peace and happiness in our lives; so does an engagement puja.

Many versions of the engagement puja also include the Graha Shanti Havan, it safeguards not only the couple but also both the families.
The engagement puja is a predecessor to the Vivah Puja and is done to bring a deeper and loving understanding between the couple and also their families.
Because it is connected to astrology, this Puja understands the placement and movement of various planets and their effects on the couple and their marriage.
Occasions to do Engagement Puja
The engagement ceremony is always held before the wedding ceremony. The gap could be that of years, months, days or even hours.
Many communities, in fact, hold the engagement puja on the same day as the Vivah puja, just a few hours before the latter.
Engagement Puja Vidhi (Procedure)
The bride’s side gives presents to the groom’s side and the groom’s side in return brings suhag related items for the bride like an outfit along with accessories.
The to-be bride then dresses up in these items and sits for the engagement puja.
The pandit then makes the couple and both sets of parents sit for the puja. Some pandits also make sure that the respective siblings are seated in the front. In many communities the groom and his father officially ask for the bride’s hand from her father.
The bride’s father then accepts the proposal.
The couple then seeks the blessings of the divine deities to bless their union.
A Ganesh puja is conducted.
The feet of the bride and the groom are washed by the members from the other side.
The ladies on the groom’s side conduct the aarti of the girl and place auspicious items like coconut, haldi, kumkum, akshata, mishri etc. in the to-be bride’s lap.
In many communities a chunni is placed over the bride’s head.
The bride and the groom then exchange rings and flowers.
They are then asked to seek blessings from the elders.
The pandit announces the engagement formally and the guests congratulate the couple and their families.

Gand Mool Nakshatra Shanti Puja

Introduction
The birth of a child in this material universe is a resultant action of the deeds which he has been doing over his past lives. Some are sinful and some are pious to the level of Karma. Unless the human being transcends the path of fruitive activities or Sakaam Karma, he has to take birth in this material universe again and again.
As stated in Bhagwad Gita (9.21)
“When they have thus enjoyed heavenly sense pleasure, they return to this mortal planet again. Thus, through the Vedic principles, they achieve only flickering happiness.”
This shows that one who is promoted to those higher planetary systems enjoys a longer duration of life and better facilities for sense enjoyment, yet one is not allowed to stay there forever. One is again sent back to this earthly planet upon finishing the resultant fruits of pious activities.
He who has not attained perfection of knowledge, as indicated in the Vedanta sutra (janmady asya yatah), or, in other words, he who fails to understand Krishna, the cause of all causes, becomes baffled in achieving the ultimate goal of life and is thus subjected to the routine of being promoted to the higher planets and then again coming down, as if situated on a Ferris wheel which sometimes goes up and sometimes comes down.
And hence, when he is born on this planet earth, he has some destiny of his own which is indicated by the planets and constellations at the time of his birth. These planetary arrangements verily decide the fate of the child.
Gand Mool Nakshatras
As per the treatises of Astrology or Jyotish shastras, there are 27 nakshatras or constellations which are the 27 equal divisions of the lunar path. The path treaded by the moon in the year is equally divided into 27 divisions and each sector comprises of a Nakshatra which is further divided into four charanasor the four steps.
Out of 27, the ones ruled by the planets Mercury and Ketu are the ones which are termed as Gand Mool Nakshatras.
The nakshatras which come under Gand mool are:

Ashwani
Ashlesha
Magha
Revati
Jyestha
Moola
These six are termed as Gand mool nakshatras and their presence is not so auspicious for the child. Mool, Jyesth and Ashlesha are more inauspicious. As per the authority of ‘Jyotish Tatwa‘, the starting 5 hours of Ashwini, Magha and Moola and ending 5 hours of Ashlesha, Jyeshth and Revati are called “Gand Mool Nakshatras”
Cause of concern about them
As per the various acharyas of Jyotish Shastra, the child born in these nakshatras is inauspicious and has to face a lot of obstacles in the life. If left untreated by suitable pujas and remedies which are not very cumbersome, the child may have to face the wrath of the malefic planets in a higher degree.
From the childhood till his old age, he has to face problems related to health, education, society, career, jobs, marriage, finance, property, positivity, mind and other aspects of his life.
He might have to struggle very hard and still might land up in situations where he would be given the least priority. Since this is an arishta yoga, the person might not be able to get the desired strength to cope up with all this.
And not only the child, the family members also have to suffer along with him. Due to this dosha, there can be troubles for the cattle, heart, maternal uncle, elder brother, spouse, father and mother.

About this puja
The Gand Mool Nakshatra shanti puja is specially meant fornegating the bad effects of Gand Mool nakshatras prevailing at the time of birth of an individual. As per the standard practice by the acharyas, it is seen that the puja is done within 27 days after the child is born so as to alleviate him from the bad effects.
Since the puja is very simple yet effective and essential for the budding child, the delay should be minimized in order to ensure the safety and sanity of the child so that his sweetness becomes sweeter over time.
Gand Mool Nakshatra Shanti puja aims at correcting and pacifying the presiding deities of the nakshatras through various processes mentioned in the scriptures.
How this puja is performed?
As per the horoscope made by the expert acharyas and pandits, the time and the date is selected for the devotee, which is based upon the zodiac signs and other planetary combinations of the person’s chart. Generally, this puja is conducted either on the birthday of the person as per the Hindu system of Tithis, not the Gregorian calendar or the day of nakshatra.

On the day of the puja, the highly qualified acharyas using the siddha mantra and empowered samagris for the puja perform the desired puja and using specially researched and authentic mantras, they create an atmosphere of positivity which the person can himself feel.
It comprises of Ayushya homa, Mrityunjaya homa, Navagraha Dosha Puja, Sapta Chiranjeevi Puja, Pran Prathista, Shodashopachara poojan, Namavali, Brihad mantra Japa, Poornahuti, Homa and Visarjan which in turn are done by our special Brahmins who have been chanting mantras and doing pujas for years, performing great austerities and getting the fruit by making them siddha.

Bhoomi Puja

Bhoomi simply means ground. Bhoomi puja is the thus the honour, worship and devotional respects being paid to the Bhoomi. Bhoomi, in Hinduism, points to Bhooma Devi, Mother Earth portrayed as a Goddess. Any site needs the blessing of the Vasthu Devata, to ensure that the structure to be erected has his permission and it ultimately leads to prosperity.

It thus can be interpreted as the ceremony performed to honour Mother Earth and the Vasthu Devata, before one erects any kind of structure or brings about any change to the ground below and the site surroundings; we seek their permission and blessings.

The Vedas have exceptional sutras and psalms to conciliate the different energies surrounding us. Through this puja, following the Vedic rituals, we assimilate that energy present in the Bhoomi, the specific site of the puja, reduce/ moderate the effects of negative vibes and thereby benefit from the overall positivity of the natural elements.
Bhoomi Puja is performed typically before the construction of any structure. It is performed in accordance with Vasthu Shastra. The Vasthu Devata is also invoked during the puja and prayers offered. The puja rituals are performed on an auspicious date chosen, presided over by a pujari. While Mondays and Thursdays are considered most ideal for the puja, Tuesdays, Sundays and Saturdays are avoided.

It is also to be noted that the puja always performed in the north-east corner of the site. Why? Because, as per the Vasthu Shastra, the Vasthu Purush’s body and organs are connected to the site/building. The layout of his organs indicate the importance of each of the 8 directions. Following such, his head is in the north east corner. It is said to be occupied by the Graha Budha (Mercury) ruled over by Lord Shiva. Any work involving one’s mental abilities, worship and such are hence best done in this corner.

A pit is dug in such corner of the puja site, a Kalash, duly organized with the prescribed elements, placed therein and the Devata is invoked there and prayers are offered.

The puja normally starts with Ganesh Puja, involves performing Navagraha Puja, Shodasa Matrika Puja and in some cases a Vishwakarma puja. The rituals of sharkarma, Sankalpam, Devi puja, Bhoomi abhisinchan, pran prathishta and manglik dravyasthapana are involved in the process.

Bhoomi Puja Vidhi may be structured in various ways, to accommodate the requirements and circumstances of the devotee on whose behalf it is to be performed. The puja can additionally include recitals/ havans such as chanting of Bhuh Sooktha, performance of Sudarshana Puja or Kaalabhairava Puja and Bagalamukhi Brahmastra Puja.
